Each Up-to-Date title starts life as a typical O'Reilly Animal book — with one important difference — and is available for purchase where books are normally sold: in stores, online, and at oreilly.com. But thanks its innovative new high-tech binding, the pages of an Up-to-Date book can be replaced and new sections added each time a new version of software is released, guaranteeing an Animal that’s never extinct. Prices of Up-to-Date books are competitive with similar print-once computer books, ranging in price from $34.99 to $49.99.

Updates

Unlike a traditional computer book, an Up-to-Date book continues to evolve and grow. Whenever there is a significant change to the technology or software the book describes, O’Reilly will publish an Update containing both new and replacement pages to bring the book in line with its subject. Updates are currently available as a free download at oreilly.com, and always include a fresh index, so the book remains as useful as ever.

Customers who are not comfortable printing, trimming, and hole-punching their updates can order a printed version directly from O’Reilly, at a nominal cost plus shipping.

The timing of each update will be determined by the release schedule of the technology the book describes. In the case of proprietary software, such as Microsoft Silverlight 2, updates can be expected at each public release (CTP, Beta, and RTM) of the product; in the case of an open source project that lacks a firm schedule, such as Dojo, updates will be issued monthly or quarterly.
